We’d heard that they existed.  Could it be too good to be true?  Slot canyons in LUXEMBOURG?  We knew that if we could find them, we wouldn’t be disappointed.  Well, we did, and they blew our minds.

Step into the forests of the Mullerthal Region of Luxemourg, and you’ll feel like you’ve been transported back in time.  The trees tower above you, the foliage a vibrant green, and the air is scented with the perfect combination of dirt and leaves in a way that only a rich forest can do.

Hike for a while and you’ll be greeted with giant towering rocks tucked among all of this.  Rocks that hold the secret slots of the Mullerthal region.

While you’re not going to find the twisting and curved slots that are typical of desert sandstone, these slots are shorter (a few hundred feet long at the largest), but just as amazing.  Twisting in and out of the boulders and formations, these slots are a true treasure that help to make Luxembourg the perfect little place that it is.

The hike is nice and gentle with mostly rolling hills, so it’s easily suitable for all ages (our 2-year-old had no problems on the trail).

Are you hooked yet?

To find the slots, you’ll be headed northwest of Luxembourg city to this area.  The trail is marked with the “A”.  Find more specific details on the trail here and here.

While you’re out there, make sure that you save a little time to go check out the Schiessentumpel bridge and waterfall (and if its warm, play in the water at the bottom).

  1. This looks like a ton of fun! I need to make a list of all the places you are visiting and keep it safe for the next 5 to 10 years. Then hopefully we’ll get stationed in Germany and have a few years to check everything off the list!
