Down below, a massive cliff drops for thousands of feet and above me are towering mountains.  Here, nestled in between the two is the beautiful town of Murren, Switzerland covered in rolling green hills slopes speckled with wildflowers.  Although you might not guess it from it’s location, this little Swiss town which is well known for it’s base-jumping, is also a perfect jumping off point for some kid friendly adventures.

Reaching this fun little town is no easy feat, since there are no roads that go here.  You can either take a cable car up or us a combination of tram and train to get here.  Once you arrive, the fun is all around you.  You can visit lots of fun little shops and cafes where on a clear day you will have one of the most beautiful views in the world of the Eiger, Monk and Jungfrau.  For us, we managed to time our trip during a week full of rain – and even then, we fell in love with this place.  Heads-up, this post is picture heavy – Murren is so beautiful, we couldn’t resist showing you our favorite things!

The #1 thing that we recommend doing is taking a trip up the Allmendhubel Funicular Train.  Although you can take a trip up to the Schilthorn for some James Bond time in the revolving restaurant, with kids we think the Allmendhubel is a better option.  Instantly, the whole family will be amazed at how steeply you ascend up the hill for even more spectacular sights.  At the top, you will be greeted by a little restaurant and one of the coolest playgrounds EVER!

The Flower Park just opened up this summer and is simply awesome.  We had planned to stay for 30 minutes and after 2 hours, we had to literally drag the kids away.  The playground is designed to give the kids an ant-sized view of the world with it’s tunnels, slides, and of course zip-lines.

After playing, we opted to hike back down to Murren instead of taking the funicular back and that was one of our best choices ever.

We quickly saw signs along the way for a “Children’s Adventure Trail” and it was fantastic.  Make sure to watch for the signs so you don’t miss when it turns off into the forest!

While the regular walk back to Murren simply follows a road back to town, the children’s adventure trail takes a slightly different route through the forest filled with creeks, cascades, and of course more playgrounds.  Here were some of our favorite things from the hike:

At the end of the day, our kids were filthy (from hiking in the rain), tired, and smiling from ear to ear.

All in all, Murren is amazing!

Next time we go, we’re going to need to find a babysitter for the kids so we can have some grown-up fun on the Via-Ferrata along the cliffs there in Murren (30chf to rent equipment from a sports shop and if you have good climbing or mountaineering experience, you can do this on your own).  Sadly, a week of rain and thousand foot cliffs where a bad combination so the route was closed (much to my husbands dismay).  Next time!

If you’re looking for another place that has awesome outdoor adventures for kids, make sure to check out Lapland Finland for lots of family adventure.

A special thanks to the Jungfrau Region Tourist board for helping to facilitate some of our activities.

  1. If you are still there you should take the kids to the Trummelbachfalle. Its a series of internal cave waterfalls right there in the Lauterbrunnen valley below Murren. I thought it was worth seeing.

  2. Hi,

Will be in the lauterbrennen valley for 4 days with our 5 yr old at the end of June and this sounds like a definite must do. Thanks so much for sharing. Looks fantastic !!
I did have a question as to how to get to the trail head. Take the cable car up to Murren and then walk to the base of the funicular ? (How long is the walk? directions ? Then take the funicular to the top and we find a playground. Then how do I find the start of the trail ?

Thanks for your help in advance,

    Aarti

  3. Hi!

We are going to Murren for a few nights in January 2017 with our baby who will turn 1 in January. Would it be safe for him to be there at that altitude? First winter trip with a baby. Advice pls!
