Having cold kids is no fun. Having cold, wet kids is downright miserable. It instantly magnifies the whining and tantrums by a power of 10 and will make you want to run home as fast as you can.
As you might imagine, this is a little bit of a problem around here. We LOVE being on the water in the summer, but rivers and lakes are always really cold.
So how do you convince your kids to like something when they’re freezing their butts off? For years, we would just layer them up in every insulating and quick drying piece of clothing we could find. Now, we have a better solution.
I’d never heard of them until a few months ago, and truthfully they’ve changed our life. Don’t laugh, it’s the truth.
Oakiwear makes rainsuits for kids. Not just any rain gear though. This stuff is SERIOUSLY tough and is made for getting really, really wet.
It’s changed our lives on the river. Mason first tested it out on our Desolation Canyon trip. We busted it out on day 3 and he refused to take it off the rest of the trip. He was warm, dry, and really happy. That made us happy too!
On the way home from that trip, we did a day trip down the Colorado. Chloe had her Oakiwear on, but Mason’s was buried somewhere in the abyss that had become our car. One good splash and Chloe was laughing hysterically, and Mason was shivering and crying. This continued for the rest of the trip.
On our next trip out to the river, Mason must have checked with me a dozen times to make sure I had his Oakiwear. He told me he wouldn’t go on the boat if I forgot it. He was 100% serious!
Yes, this gear has changed the water game permanently.
Here’s what we love about them:
- Available in one or 2 piece sets, so they are great for all ages.
- INEXPENSIVE!!! Seriously, these are such a great deal. Right now you can get the one piece for $37.99 and the two-piece for $49.99. You’d be lucky to find just a jacket at REI for that price. Throw in the awesome construction and this is a killer deal (read to the bottom for a discount code to sweeten the deal even more).
- Adjustable neoprene cuffs and waistband (pants) keep water out.
- Taped seams keep water out.
- Hooded – perfect for the rain or really wet river trips.
The only thing we don’t like is that the biggest size they have is a kids size 9. Honestly, I’d buy these for myself in a heartbeat if they had my size. Seriously, you’re not going to find anything like these anywhere, and the price can’t be beat.
So whether you’re into kayaking, rafting or extreme puddle jumping (‘cuz let’s face it, you know if your kid sees a puddle they’ll soak every inch of their clothing), this is for you. Have I gushed enough about how much I love these? They really are that great!
Take THAT cold water!
(Just so you don’t think we’re totally irresponsible, Chloe does have a PFD on under her suit)
Now, these are already a great deal, but Oakiwear is offering our readers an additional 15% off their order. Simply enter the coupon code “bringthekids” at checkout.
Also, because they’re awesome, Oakiwear is hooking one of you up with a rainsuit (1 or 2 piece). Thanks!

Oakiwear provided these pieces at no cost for the purposes of this review. These are our honest opinions and are not influenced by that. However, we’re being totally truthful when we say this gear really is the best we’ve seen!
