“It’s too hot outside to play!”

We’ve all heard it before.  Shoot, I bet we’ve all said it before too.

super hot

Guess, what?  Your kids will be just fine playing outside (and you will too) even when it’s super hot.

Trust me, mine do it all the time, AND we live in an incredibly hot place (with summer temps regularly around 120 F).

The trick is to be smart about it.

To maintain everyone’s sanity and keep your family happy and healthy, here are five great tips to get your kids to play outside even when it’s SUPER hot!:

1.  Avoid the heat of the day.  There is usually a block of about three hours that you can easily identify as the hottest time, usually between noon and 3pm.  That chunk of time is great for lunch, summer reading, and chores.

2.  Time your activities stratigically.  Things that are really active should be done at the very end or the very beginning of the day since they require more exertion.  For example, in our house bike riding happens before breakfast…and usually in pajamas (don’t judge), and sports with the neighborhood kids happens after dinner.

3.  Use shade to your advantage.  100 degrees is a whole lot different in the shade than in the sun.  As the day heats up, find a shady area and hang out there.  Trust me, your house has four sides so you should be able to find some shade at all times (unless you live in a yurt…then you’re so cool you can do whatever you want).  Better yet, find a wooded area and you can likely play under the shaded canopy all day long!

4.  Include water.  Whether it’s a pool, a lake a river, or just your hose, hot temperatures are always easier to handle with some water to cool everyone down.

5.  Stay hydrated.  Staying hydrated is one of the best ways to maintain your energy levels when it’s super hot.  Read here for five ways to trick your kids into staying hydrated.

On especially hot days, it’s always important to keep a good eye on your kids.  If they are starting to show signs that the heat is too much for them, find a good place for them to cool down.

Enjoy the sunshine!
